File:Common tern diving for a fish 1.jpg

Original file (939 × 1,352 pixels, file size: 617 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

I took this picture at the Breezy Point, New York wildlife preserve. These birds make their nesting summer home here, and in the past were very aggressive towards humans -- diving at their, or our, heads. In recent these terns have become far less defensive. They catch little fish in the surf by diving, and then fly back to their nests with the fish, presumably to feed their families. They make noises on their way home, and often gulls try to steal their fish in flight.
