Description / Descriptions :
Known as one of the chief followers of Louis Joseph Papineau, Wolfred Nelson (1791-1863) played a leading role in the Rebellion of 1837 and was among those exiled to the Bermudas in 1838. Under amnesty he returned to Montreal in 1843, where he briefly resumed his medical practice. He sat in Canada's Legislative Assembly from 1844 to 1851. In 1859, he became chairman of the board of prison inspectors. The artist Jean-Joseph Girouard was also exiled with Wolfred Nelson. Stylistically, this portrait miniature is dissimilar to Girouard's work and may possibly be the work of Bouchette. /

Une fois amnistié, il retourna à Montréal en 1843, où il reprit brièvement sa pratique médicale. Il siégea à l'Assemblée législative du Canada de 1844 à 1851. En 1859, il devint président de la commission des inspecteurs de prison.
