The Orange Order, the Ulster Protestants' answer to the Masons, was founded near this church about the same time as the minister preached a fire-and-brimstone sermon that occasioned his audience to go out and beat up local Catholics. Later, the Orangemen tried to parade from the church through a Catholic area, causing massive rioting throughout the province.
