I sincerely doubt the photo's authenticity, with respect to 1967 or later; especially with a B-47 in the foreground, the F-102s, the hangars and the landscape. I was stationed at Tan Son Nhut from Dec '67 to Dec '68 and the photo does not reflect my memory of the ramp as an EW technician. RF-101C, RF-4C and RB-57 were in revetments (none seen in this photo) along with AC/EC-47 and various USN aircraft on the ramp. Is this photo from a somewhat earlier time period? I was stationed at Mtn. Home AFB, ID 1964 - 1967 and recall that the B-47E was sent to Davis-Monthan in 1966 but a few aircraft may have been reassigned some active-duty rather than being "mothballed". ed novak
I concur with the validity of the timing on this picture. I was stationed at Ton San Nhut AFB from August 22, 1968 to August 20 1969 and during that time All RF-4C's were in revetments. The Photo reconnaissance shops were built inside a hangar on the second floor with the radar group on the first floor.
This photo was not taken at Tan Son Nhut. Rather, it is of the south ramp and flightline of Clark Air Base in the Philippines. To my knowledge, no B-47s ever visited Tan Son Nhut. todd g
I was at TSN from 18 Sep 67 to 19 Apr 69 as a 46250 weapons, not once did I ever see a B-47 or an F 102 on the ramp. This photo is totally in error. tom kessey
I was stationed at Tan Son Nhut from Sep 69 to Sep 70. I was in POL and refueled aircraft. No B-47's were there. Refueled c7A's,123's,130's,101 Recons,124's,o2a's, 01's,105's, canberra's,141's,AC-119 Shadows,C-46 Korean AF,F4's,beaucoup UH1's,Cobras,CH-47's,C-47's etc. terry wills
I was an F-102A pilot with the 509th FIS. This photo appears to be from Clark AB, RP. Only six F-102s were deployed to Tan Son Nhut from Clark, so the number of aircraft alone, along with the B-47 places this photo at Clark. paul edelen
During '67 - '68, I was stationed at Clark AB in the PI. We deployed F-102's to Bien Hoa and Da Nang AB's in Vietnam, and Don Muang and Udorn AB's in Thailand, and no more than six to each TDY base. This suspiciously looks like Clark, except that there are no mountains visible. However, depending upon where the picture was taken, it could be Clark. The alert hangars were at the end of the flight line, and looked like the ones in the picture, so maybe.... Rusty Leonard |
