Summary

Description A Grumman F11F-1 Tiger of attack squadron VA-156 Iron Tigers after just having been catapulted from an aircraft carrier. The Naval Aviation News identifies the carrier as the USS Hancock (CVA-19), but VA-156 was not deployed on the Hancock as part of Carrier Air Group 15 (CVG-15) (tail code "NL"). VA-156 deployed from 8 March to 21 November 1958 to the Western Pacific aboard the USS Shangri-La (CVA-38) as part of Carrier Air Group 11 (CVG-11) (tail code "NH"). Maybe VA-156 was reassigned from CVG-15 to CVG-11. VA-156 was redesignated fighter squadron VF-111 Sundowners on 20 January 1959, and deployed aboard the Hancock with CVG-11 in 1960/61 before transitioning to the Vought F8U-2N Crusader.
