English: The Games of the XV Olympiad were celebrated in Helsinki from 19 July to 3 August 1952. Helsinki had expected to host the 1940 Olympic Games, but those Games had to be cancelled because of World War II.
The most unforgettable moment of the Opening Ceremony was the entry of the Olympic flame. When the name of Paavo Nurmi flashed on the electric scoreboard, the Stadium was filled with thunderous applause. Athletes broke ranks in the infield to catch a glimpse of the legendary runner. Paavo Nurmi lit the Olympic flame in a cauldron on the field.
