Summary

Description Fort Augustus and Loch Ness. A bridge over the road that runs alongside the north bank of the Caledonian Canal, but at a lower level. This bridge carried the Invergarry & Fort Augustus Railway on its way to the pier on Loch Ness, where connections were made with steamers to Inverness, a reasonable means of transport compared with the poor roads of the day when it opened on 22 July 1903. The canal is immediately behind and to the left of the photographer. The useful life of the one mile between the village station and the pier was over when the pier station closed on 30 September 1907, although a third of the whole cost of the 24 mile line was expended on this final mile, which usually carried one train a day each way.
