Summary

Description
English: A tomb relief commemorating the marriage of the ex-slaves Lucius Aurelius Hermia and his wife Aurelia Philematium ('Little Kiss'). "She was the only one for me, and lived her life faithful to her faithful husband". The inscription indicates that both were slaves of a butcher called Lucius "from the Viminal Hill", that she predeceased her husband at the age of 40, and that he had looked after her from the age of 7, suggesting he may have purchased her as part of his slave's peculium. Unless liberated, slaves could not contract a valid marriage. According to the Curator at thr British Museum, this relief, which dates from the Roman Republic, is one of the earliest to commemorate the legitimate marriage of former slaves.
