DescriptionFresco of Hermes as Priapus (Gabinetto Segreto).jpg
English: The god Mercury is presented striding forward in rustic style as the fertility god Priapus. He has the attributes of Mercury - the caduceus (golden staff with two snakes), money bag, and winged ankles - but he wears a wreath on his head, and an animal skin, under which Priapus' enormous erect phallus appears. Probably from the facade of a shop, to serve as an apotropaic (protective) device, protecting the premises against the evil eye, ill will and envy.
From the Gainetto Segreto (Secret Room or Secret Cabinet) in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (Naples National Archaeological Museum). No inventory number.
