THE LATE WAY KEY. Way Key [1824 - 1892] was a Chinese merchant, who lived in lower George-street, Sydney.<ref>The Late Way Key, Australian Star (Sydney, NSW : 1887 - 1909), Thursday 1 September 1892, page 3</ref> He was born in the Dongguan (/dʊŋˈɡwæn/;[3] Chinese: 东莞市) in central Guangdong Province, China. He lived in Australia for many years right up to the time of his death and although his operations were based in Sydney he had commerical interests in many small towns and owned a large business in Hongkong.<ref>The Late Way Key, Australian Star (Sydney, NSW : 1887 - 1909), Thursday 1 September 1892, page 3</ref> Way never sopke English and although relatively unknown to Europeons he was highly respectedby within the Chinese diaspora. He was a persistent opponent to the opium trade and worked hard to check its terrible effects amongst the population.<ref>The Late Way Key, Australian Star (Sydney, NSW : 1887 - 1909), Thursday 1 September 1892, page 3</ref> At the time of his death the bulk of his property valued in 1892 as being between £60,600 and £70,090, remained in Australia and his business was inherited by bis son and grandson, L. War Mun Way Key, who has instructions to look after affairs here until joined by his father, who is expected shortly from China.<ref>The Late Way Key, Australian Star (Sydney, NSW : 1887 - 1909), Thursday 1 September 1892, page 3</ref> Mr. Way Lee, of Adelaide, a nephew of deceased, trioerd to see his uncle before he died but the stringent Chinese Restriction Act meant he was was unable to arrive before Way Key died.<ref>The Late Way Key, Australian Star (Sydney, NSW : 1887 - 1909), Thursday 1 September 1892, page 3</ref> The late Mr. Way Key held the rank of mandarin or the order of Gaum Shang, was buried in China.
