Summary

Description
English: Georgetown CA was a gold mining town established during the California "Gold Rush," 1849-1870. The town was a stop on the main Overland Mail Route and was a target for frequent mail robberies, which eventually prompted Wells Fargo & Co to discontinue service through Georgetown as local official were not able to bring the criminals to justice. The Gold Rush coincided with the American Civil War (1861 – 1865) and California was viewed as a valuable asset to the Union due to its rich gold deposits. As a result, many towns formed state militias to help protect the community and businesses. In 1859, an elected military company known was the Georgetown Blues was formed to help preserve the law and order of the town.
