Description
English: Francesco d'Assisi practices an exorcism against the devils of Arezzo; Giotto's fresco in the Church of Saint Francis, Assisi / Giotto began his apprenticeship with Cimabue between the ages of ten and fourteen. A trip to Rome probably completed the young painter's training, after which he followed his teacher to what was at the time the largest "building site" in Italy, the Church of St. Francis in Assisi. There, Cimabue was in charge of the decoration of the newly erected High Church. When he left Assisi to fulfill other duties, several of his aides and officers, including Giotto, were left behind. At the same time, the Roman painters, led by Jacopo Torriti, arrived in Assisi, so several study groups were then working together. Not long after, Giotto became the independent leader of a workshop, and the Franciscan order assigned him the task of continuing with the decoration.
