GIOTTO di Bondone
(b. 1267, Vespignano, d. 1337, Firenze)
No. 28 Scenes from the Life of Christ: 12. Judas Receiving Payment for his Betrayal
1304-06
Fresco, 150 x 140 cm
Cappella Scrovegni (Arena Chapel), Padua
We now come to the scene on the left side of the chancel arch, Judas receiving Payment for his Betrayal. Judas is shown in profile, with a black halo and with the devil standing behind him. His portrayal is in keeping with those simple didactic precepts that would have evil revealed by an ugly face.
