Gules, on a pile between two ostrich heads erased argent each holding a horseshoe in the beak or a lion rampant of the field; crest: In front of fern vert an ostrich's head erased argent holding in the beak a horseshoe or (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1067, "Wallace of Sudbourne Hall, Suffolk, baronets"). Note: the arms of the Scottish family of Wallace of Craigie, in Ayrshire, baronets (supposedly the family of Sir Richard's mother (Lisburn Historical Society, Volume 3 pt.2 THE LIFE AND WORK OF SIR RICHARD WALLACE Bart. MP (Synopsis of an Address given by J. F. Burns, Belfast to the members of the Parent-Teachers' Association of Wallace, High School, Lisburn, on Tuesday, 29th April, 1980, in connection with the centenary of the foundation of the School.)[1]), are Gules, a lion rampant argent (Burke, p.1067), thus the pile in Sir Richard's arms follows this but with tinctures inverted. The crest of the Wallace family of Craigie shows the same ostrich head holding a horse-shoe, but issuant from a ducal crown. The Wallace ostrich head with horseshoe also appears in the coat of arms of the Borough of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, his most important estate. They do not "refer to his fame as a collector" (Lisburn Borough Guide 1983, pub. Lisburn Borough Council, p.15, Coat of arms[2]) as the ostrich is taken from the crest of Wallace's mother Agnes Wallace (or Agnes Jones) a member of the Wallace family of Cragie Castle in Scotland. The coat of arms which he was granted in 1871 included an ostrich’s head with a horseshoe. |
