Nearly restricted to the higher mountains of Inyo and Mono counties, California, and Esmeralda and Mineral counties, Nevada. Sometimes confused with smaller forms of Cymopterus aboriginum. Also visible here are leaves of raspberry buckwheat (Eriogonum gracilipes) and mat milkvetch (Astragalus kentrophyta var. tegetarius). Substrate is carbonate (Reed Dolomite).
