Description
Critical notes from the artesuarte website
In this painting, presented by Borrani at the First National Exhibition of 1861, the climate of democratic fervor is reflected, which accompanied the events of 1859, when the Grand Duke Leopold II, pushed by popular pressure, on the 27th, decided to leave Florence. The picture in question, depicting a young woman intent on sewing the tricolor the day before the popular demonstrations, is not only of interest as a historical document, but also constitutes a very significant moment in the development of realism in Tuscany. tradition of historical paintings, with a lively romantic fantasy, but it is detached from it because it is represented through the daily and familiar experience typical of realism. The painting achieved great success at its first appearance, so much so that it was bought by the prince of Carignano, soon disappearing from the market by virtue of the purchase made by the royal. Only in a relatively recent time did it reappear on the market, allowing to appreciate the contribution that the young Borrani gave to the transformation of the gender picture in Tuscany. The motif of this painting was later taken up by Borrani in one of his masterpieces, Le cucitrici di camice rosse.
