Hatchment, St Mary's Church, Grendon, Northamptonshire. For Hatton Compton (d.1741) of Grendon Hall (which he rebuilt), who in 1698 at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Westminster, married Penelope Nicholas, (London marriage licences 1521-1869, By Joseph Foster, Joseph Lemuel Chester, John Ward Dean, p.317[1]) a daughter of Sir Edward Nicholas (1593-1669), Secretary of State. He was the son of Sir Charles Compton (d.1661) (second son of Spencer Compton, 2nd Earl of Northampton (1601-1643)) by his wife Mary Fermor, daughter of Sir Hatton Fermor of Easton-Neston in Northamptonshire, ancestor to the Earl of Pomfret. Hatton Compton was constituted Lieutenant of the Tower of London, on July 26, 1715, in which place he was continued by King George II. He died Jan. 22, 1740-1, at his house in Marlborough Street, aged upwards of 80, leaving by his wife (a daughter of Sir Edward Nicholas (1593-1669), Secretary of State), a daughter Penelope Compton, married to Matthias Mawson (1683–1770), Bishop of Ely ; also three sons, Charles Compton, Edward Compton, and James Compton; whereof Edward Compton, Esq; cashier of the half-pay officers, was in May 1741, appointed Pay-master of the troops then to go abroad, as likewise of the Dutch and Hessian forces in the pay of Great-Britain.
