Although not without precedent, the Hollinger farmhouse is a rare example of high-style Second Empire architecture exhibited on a rural farmhouse in Kansas. Characterized by a Mansard roof, central tower, cupola, quoins, eave brackets, bay windows, and decorative one-story side porches, the Second Empire style was popular in the second half of the nineteenth century, specifically 1860-1880.
