Mural monument to Capt. Joseph Taylor (d.1733), Royal Navy. West wall of Taylor Chapel in Denbury Church, Devon. Sculpted by John Weston of Exeter. His son was Joseph Taylor (c.1693-1746) who married Rebecca Whitrow, daughter of John Whitrow of Dartmouth and niece and heiress of Richard Reynell (c.1681-1734/5), MP, of East Ogwell, West Ogwell and of Denbury. Inscription (transcribed per p.242, Appendix 1: Adams, Maxwell, Some Notes on the Churches and Manors of East and West Ogwell, published in Report and Transactions of the Devonshire Association, Vol.32 (Vol.2, second series), Plymouth, 1900, pp.228 et seq.[1][2]):
Memoriae Sacrum Josephi Taylor Armigeri qui per plures annos navis bellicae praefectus id munus summa cum laude implevit rebus praeclare gestis apud suos apud exteros celeberrimus Gallicas quatuor triremes unicis viribus aggressas virtute plane heroica sustinuit hostici sanguine infecit aequor et naves misere laceratas dimissit per totam Galliae classem proprio marte sibi viam aperuit et raro in portam rediit bellicis non decoratus trophoeis. Inter hostes acer et intrepidus inter amicos comis et urbanus. Illis terrorem semper incussi; his usque suavem se et amabilem praestitit. Religionis cultor sincerus non minus morali quam bellica virtute inclaruit.
