Summary
DescriptionJuist schule am meer 1929.png |
English: Drawing of Schule am Meer on the East Frisian island of Juist in the Free State of Prussia in German Reich. Due to the stage of expansion the drawing can be dated to summer 1928. One building on the far left and three on the far right are not related to S.a.M. The viewer of this drawing looks northbound, so the beach and the North Sea are in the upper part behind the dune range. Its lower part (southbound) sports the boathouse near Wadden Sea and the barn for livestock of the boarding school. A dingy sails in front of the boathouse in the Wadden Sea. On the barns right is the Duck Pond (its remnants today named: Alder Pond) which the younger students used to raft on. The smaller posts which can be recognized are related to electricity and telephone, the higher posts all flag posts. The boarding school's flagpost is shaped like a Christian cross with plus two sidearms. Each comradeship had a pennant which was raised and pulled down acc. to the presence of the individual comradeship, so during vacations usually all were down. Same with the boarding school's flag. There also had been an obligation to raise the German national flag, the Prussian flag plus after Jan 30, 1933 the Nazi swastika flag. The drawing indicates the locations of a few of the eleven vegetable gardens the students and teachers had layed out. All gardens including the school's botanical garden had to be secured against the steadily moving sand of the dunes and some cows so they got fenced. All the dunes had to be fixed with sods / turf divots, a nearly daily task for students and teachers alike.
