Estebanillo González. — Una de las mejores obras de Le-sage es Estebanillo González, que dice imitada de otra española, compuestapor su mismo prota-gonista, y publicada LIBROS DEL SIGLO XVIIen Amberes (1646),con dedicatoria al du-que de Amalfi, gene-ral de los ejércitos es-pañoles en los PaisesBajos, de cuya casaera oficial el autor.Advierte Lesage queno traduce literalmen-te, sino que suprimepasajes y los reempla-za con otros ideadospor él o tomados devarios autores caste-llanos. Así es, en efecto,y en mayor medidaque la indicada por elcélebre novelista fran-cés. El libro españolque cita y dice imitar,aunque libremente, esLa vida i hechos deEstebanillo González,hombre de buen hu-mor, compuesta por elmesmo, dedicada alExcellentisimo SeñorOctavio Piccolomini,Duque de Amalfi, im-preso en Amberes (382 páginas en 4.), con el retrato de Estebanillo, gra-bado por Lucas Vorsterman.
