Summary

Description
English: This true-color image of Hurricane Laura over the Gulf of Mexico was captured on the morning of August 26, 2020, at 14:26 UTC (9:26 AM CDT), by the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument flying aboard NOAA's GOES-16 satellite. Laura was a powerful hurricane that affected the Caribbean, Louisiana, and parts of Texas in August 2020. The thirteenth depression, the twelfth named storm, the third hurricane, and the first major hurricane of the extremely active 2020 North Atlantic hurricane season. It originated from a tropical wave off the coast of Africa in mid-August 2020, where it began its track westward through the Central Atlantic toward the Leeward Islands. From August 21 to 25, Laura passed through the Caribbean passing by countries and territories like Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and Cuba. When this image was taken, Laura was rapidly intensifying over the Gulf moving northwest toward the Gulf Coast. The intensity of the hurricane when this image was taken was winds of 115 mph (190 km/h) (100 knots) on the 1-min Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, making it a "Category 3 Major Hurricane" on the scale. The estimated minimum central pressure (provided by the NHC) was at around 959 mbar (28.3 inHg).
