Peintures du plafond du temple de Shivakamasundari, dans l'enceinte du temple de Shiva Nataraja à Chidambaram Le temple de la déesse Shivakamasundari (une des formes de Parvati), parèdre de Shiva, est situé sur le côté ouest du réservoir Shivaganga. La déesse y est vénérée comme le Jnana Shakti : l'énergie de la connaissance. Sur les plafonds de la salle hypostyle, des peintures de l'époque médiévale illustrent l'histoire Bhikshatana ou celle Shiva mendiant. Les galeries qui entourent le temple et les piliers sont décorés de reliefs de danseurs et de musiciens. Ce temple a été probablement construit au 11ème siècle sous le roi Chola : I. Kulottunga Le temple de Shiva Nataraja dans sa forme actuelle date principalement des 12e et 13e siècles, avec des ajouts ultérieurs dans le style dravidien. C'est l'un des lieux saints du Shivaïsme. Il est dédié au Shiva Nataraja (Shiva dansant). Les danses de Shiva sont au nombre de sept (avec 108 poses combinées). Celle dansée par Shiva à Chidambaram est la plus connue, c'est "l'ânada-tândavam". Elle est exécutée sur le terrain d'incinération, celui-ci symbolise le coeur des hommes, le feu détruisant notre ego, c'est à dire les illusions. La danse permet d'atteindre la libération. Le temple comprend 4 enceintes et 9 entrées (autant que le corps humain). Certaines entrées sont surmontées de Gopuram(s) de 7 étages. A l'intérieur du temple, se trouvent la Cella contenant la statue de Shiva Nataraja, plusieurs sanctuaires (Shivakamasundari, Subramanya/Murugan...) , un vaste bassin sacré, entouré d'une colonnade et des salles pour accueillir les fidèles dont une salle aux mille piliers (Raja Sabha).
