If the road leading to the mansion were winding, so that ashort turn brought the stranger in view suddenly, within afew yards of the house, one might hear the master or mistressgiving orders to the servant: Sally, run out and see what those dogs are barking at!and Sally would then hunt for a stick or an oyster shell to• chunk back the dogs who seemed fierce as wolves: Git back fum yere, yo yaller debbils, fore I chunk yorehide offen yo, was Sallys forceful warning, at which thedogs would slink away, and pay no more attention to thestranger, other than to smell of his heels as he gladlyadvanced into the house beyond their reach. To one unaccustomed to such scenes, and ignorant of thefact that barking dogs seldom bite, great credit would begiven Sally for saving their life. Since the Civil War there are few large packs kept as thefoxes and deer have in many places become entirely extinct,and the people have become too industrious to spend muchtime as formerly in hunting.
