Summary

Description

This rare fine limestone and partially gilded statue of pharaoh Osorkon III of the Twenty-third Dynasty of Egypt was discovered within the famous Karnak Cachette where it had been buried in the north-west section of the courtyard of the Precinct of Amun-Re, in front of the Seventh Pylon. The French Egyptologist Georges Legrain discovered the Karnak Cachette, which consisted of nearly 800 stone statues and 17,000 bronze statues as well as various other artifacts, between 1903-1905.

This statue depicts Osorkon III kneeling and pushing forward a bark of the hawk or falcon god Seker and dates to the 9th century BC. This is the only know surviving statue or sculpture of Osorkon III who ruled Upper Egypt for 28 years. This photo was personally taken by Francois Galluccio / VivaFox.
