Afrikaans: Die kleinwindswael is 'n klein windswaelspesie wat hoofsaaklik in Afrika en Suidwes-Asië voorkom. Hulle word moeisaam gefotografeer omdat hulle altyd aan't beweeg is, en dan ook redelik vinnig. Hulle vlieg eintlik daagliks oor my erf, maar ek kon dusver nog nie daarin slaag om tuis 'n goeie foto van hulle te kry nie. In Januarie het ek 'n paar ure spandeer om 'n foto by die Satara-ruskamp in die Krugerwildtuin te kry, wat eindelaas drie ordentlike foto's opgelewer het. Windswaels word deur die familie Apodidae omvat, 'n groep voëls wat uit besonder bedrewe vlieërs bestaan. Hulle is op die oog af soortgelyk aan swaeltjies, maar is tog nie verwant aan hulle of enige ander sangvoëls nie, maar eerder aan die kolibries. Ooreenkomste tussen windswaels en swaeltjies word aan die uitwerking van konvergente evolusie toegeskryf aangesien die lewensnis van albei groepe die vang van insekte in vlug behels.
English: The little swift is a small species of swift found primarily in Africa and southwestern Asia. They are difficult to photograph as they are always on the move, and they move quite quickly. They actually in my yard every day, but I have not managed to get a good photo of them here. In January, I spent some hours trying to get one photo at Satara Campsite in Kruger National Park. I managed three decent photos.
Swifts comprise the family Apodidae and are highly aerial birds. They are superficially similar to swallows, but are not related to them or any other passerine (perching) birds, instead belonging to the order Apodiformes along with hummingbirds. Resemblance between swifts and swallows is a result of convergent evolution, reflecting a similar niche that involves catching insects in flight. |
