Summary

Description
English: Loch nam Ban Mòra The loch of the powerful women. Until around the sixteenth century Eigg itself was called Eilean Nimban More or the Island of the Powerful Women. The island on the loch is mapped as the site of an ancient Dun. I always thought of a Dun as being an ancient hillfort which does not seem appropriate for this little island. Perhaps a crannog, the more usual name for a fortified lake dwelling would be better. Crannogs were in use up to the 17th century when the building of them was outlawed in 1608. But http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/highlighteigg.html states the Dun is prehistoric.
