DescriptionLois Gibbs Sacred Eagle Rock Big Bay, MI 10-15-10 (38).JPG
English: Love Canal protestor Lois Gibbs joins in a circle of sulfide mining opponents at the entrance to the Kennecott Eagle Minerals mine that is under construction in a remote area of Marquette County, Michigan near Lake Superior. Kennecott Minerals said it plans to blast through Eagle Rock in 2011 to create the portal to the underground operations. For thousands of years, Ojibwa and Anishinaabe have conducted religious and spiritual ceremonies at Eagle Rock where the Thunderbirds and other spirits are thought to live but state of Michigan officials refused to protect the site that was given to Anishinaabe tribes in treaties over 100 years ago granting them rights to fish, hunt and gather.
