DescriptionLondon - Houses of Parliament (2697087848).jpg
The Houses of Parliament are housed in the Palace of Westminster, on the Thames River. "Big Ben" is in the distance, and the higher Victoria Tower is in the foreground. Westminster Bridge is at the right. The original Palace of Westminster was built over a long period of time, beginning around 1100. Most of it was destroyed by a great fire in 1834. The current structure was built over more than 30 years, incorporating those parts of the palace that survived the fire. It was completed in 1870. The architects were Sir Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin.
