The Brownell School was added to the National Register on February 1, 2006.
The original school building was erected in 1850, and demolished in 1865. It was replaced with a new building in 1865. This second structure was demolished in 1930 and is now a parking lot.
The first of the existing annexes (the "third school") opened in September 1885. A second annex (the "fourth school") opened in 1905. A third annex (the "fifth school"), designed to link the first annex to the 1865 building, opened in 1909.
