On 16 August the first of several public open days will be held to show local communities what the new Mangere Bridge will look like. This will be the replacement for the bridge that was closed on 25 November 2018, after being used as a footpath and cycleway for about 35 years after the opening of the current motorway bridge in 1983.
Although the new bridge has a walkway and cyclepath underneath it, the old bridge continued to be used as a walking and cycling link between Onehunga and Mangere Bridge, and it had also become a popular fishing spot.
This photo shows the old bridge when it was carrying motor traffic, from a Ministry of Works photograph c.1980, held in Auckland Regional Office -
