De kaart werd voorbereid voor een bijeenkomst in 1623, met het oog op de bespreking van de noodzaak van de bouw van een fort bij de Araya-zoutpannen, die door de Nederlanders dreigden te worden overgenomen.
English: Map of Araya by Andrés Rodríguez de Villegas, governor of Margarita in the 17th century. The map was prepared for a meeting in 1623, with a view to discussing the need for the construction of a fortress near the Araya salt flats, which were in danger of being taken over by the Dutch.
