The bronze sculpture was produced by artist Sebastian Boyesen during his year as town sculptor (1993- 1994). The memorial is a classical figurative bronze that represents the spirit of the merchant seaman, that sits on a plinth. The figure is without clothes except for a loincloth as the Merchant Seaman were not expected to wear a uniform.
