A native of Baltimore, Richards graduated from Goucher College (then the Woman’s College of Baltimore) with a degree in zoology in 1908. She taught at Western High School in Baltimore for three years, the last of which she spent as a part-time student at Johns Hopkins University, before enrolling at Columbia University in 1911. While there, Richards focused her research on animal genetics, and earned her A.M. in 1912 and Ph.D. in zoology in 1914. She worked at the University of Indiana as an instructor in zoology from 1914 to 1917 before retiring to care for her family. She also taught at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado for several summers, and returned to teaching as an associate professor at the University of Oklahoma in 1947 for a year before moving to Arizona, where she did substitute teaching for some time. For much of her professional career, Richards published eleven articles in scientific magazines, including the Journal of Animal Behavior, Journal of Experimental Zoology, American Naturalist, Biological Bulletin, and the Proceeding of Oklahoma Academy of Science. Richards passed away in 1968 in Arizona."
