DescriptionMilepost, Trent and Mersey Canal near Fradley, Staffordshire - geograph.org.uk - 1559770.jpg
English: Milepost, Trent and Mersey Canal near Fradley, Staffordshire There are two kinds of curve topped cast iron mileposts on the Trent and Mersey Canal - originals and replicas. This one is original, the white letters near the base being:
R & D
Stone
1819
These are from the Rangeley* and Dixon foundry at Stone, in Staffordshire.
The replica ones have the mark T & MCS 1977, which were installed by the Trent and Mersey Canal Society two hundred years after the canal opened.
All the posts have Shardlow on the left, so the posts on the south side of the canal appear to indicate the correct way to each end of the canal, those on the north side do not. (Thanks to TR for leading me to this discovery).
* Ignore Nicholson Guides which refer to Rougeley and Dixon; not correct.
