DescriptionMonaghan Saint Macartan's Cathedral Relief Macartan 506 – 2006 by Elizabeth Ryan 2013 09 21.jpg |
Saint Macartan's Cathedral, Monaghan, County Monaghan, Ireland English: Relief “Macartan 506 – 2006”, created by the artist Elizabeth Ryan. Description from a close information panel leaflet: “It portrays St. Macartan in garments of the period as a tall, vigorous apostle and helper of St. Patrick. Macartan is known in the tradition as Tréanfhear Phádraig. On the left side of the panel is the Rowan Tree – his name means ‘son of the Rowan’. In his hand is the book of the Gospels and placed at the base of the panel is the ‘Domnach Airgid’, the decorative shrine casket in which the Book of the Gospels was housed, now in the National Museum of Ireland. In his right hand he holds the crozier, symbol of his office as Bishop, and at the foot of the tree and at the back of the panel is water, symbol of Christian Baptism and a reminder of the many wells throughout the local countryside in which his converts were immersed and baptised. The water also refers to the story of how Macartan carried the ageing Patrick over the River Blackwater near Clogher where Patrick made him bishop.” |
