English: NSWR Class D59 2-8-2 No.5910 (Baldwin Lima Hamilton No.75573 of 1952) at Trainworks, the New South Wales Railway Museum, Thirlmere, 31 March 2016. After WWII the NSWR wanted freight engines urgently and consequently ordered 20 US Army Transportation Corps 2-8-2 but wanted the standard design to be modified to incorporate a cast steel bed and a shorter tender (to fit on NSWR turntables) which resulted in considerable delay to the order being fulfilled (1952-53), which nullified the whole point of ordering 'off the peg' engines - which in the event were anything but! Completed as coal burners, all bar one (withdrawn in 1957) were converted to oil burners in the late 1950's but converted back to coal in 1962-63. These were withdrawn in 1969-72.
