Residential areas are located near the river, including several communities in Imperial County as it traverses the 60 miles between the International Boundary and the Salton Sea.
Surface water in the New River is contaminated with metals, pesticides, VOC's, and bacteria. Pathogenic viruses have also been reported in the New River.
Human exposure to contaminants in the surface water occurred in the past and could occur in the present and in the future.
