Summary
DescriptionNorthwest State Office Building, Capitol Street and Forster Street, Harrisburg, PA.jpg |
English: Built in 1939, this Classical Revival-style state office building was constructed as the first part of a planned northern expansion of the Pennsylvania State Capitol complex to the north, which never came to fruition, and was built with Public Works Administration (PWA) funding. The building features a cream brick facade, granite base, limestone trim, recessed window bays in the center of the facades on the ends of the wings, front, and sides of the building, with stone spandrel panels, one-over-one double-hung windows, setbacks at the building’s roofline, stone sills, stone parapets, a tall central portion with a sizable penthouse, a main entrance on the east facade along Capitol Street with a large cartouche emblazoned on the stone panels above the front door and two eagle statues flanking the door, with a decorative stone trim surround and aluminum doors at the recessed entrance, and planters to either side of the doorway, and a secondary side entrance along Forster Street with a decorative trim surround, eagle sculpture above the door, and two large lantern-type light fixtures flanking the door. The building is a part of the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The State Capitol Complex was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 2006, and saw a boundary increase in 2013 to include some previously omitted historic structures. |
