Summary

Description
English: George's Island (named after George II of Great Britain) is the largest island entirely within the harbour limits of Halifax Harbour. The Island is the location of Fort Charlotte - named after King George's wife Charlotte. Fort Charlotte was built during Father Le Loutre's War, a year after Citadel Hill (Fort George). The island is now a National Historic Site of Canada. The first lighthouse on George's Island was established in 1876. In 1916 the lighthouse was destroyed by fire. A temporary light was established from a dwelling on the island. Early in 1919, the light was lit in a new concrete lighthouse. The same design was used at Louisbourg in 1923. This is the lighthouse that stands on the island today. It is about 61 meters (200ft) from the keeper's dwelling, which is still standing.
