Summary

Description
English: Ólavsøka means Sct. Olav's Wake, it is the national holiday of the Faroe Islands. It is held on 28 and 29 July. One of the main events are the boat races down in the harbour of Tórshavn, the eastern harbour. Men and women and children too are rowing in different categories. The children are rowing 500 meters, the adults are rowing 1000, 1500 or 2000 meters. However the fjord of Tórshavn is so short, that it is not possible to row any further distances than 1000 meters (or actually only 900 meters). But the Olavsøka boat race (Kappróður) is the most important of all the races and the final one. There are 7 festivals around the islands with boat races which compete about the Faroese Championship. The winner gets 7 points, number two gets 6 points and so on. These boats are from the category Women 6-oar boats, in Faroese it is called "6-mannafør kvinnur". The winner of this boat race was the yellow boat from Runavík, Sølmundur, number two was the green boat Hvessingur and number three was the white boat Gongurólvur from Tórshavn. Riddarin, Lómur and Jarnbardur were number 4, 5 and 6. The winning boats get a trophy (sometimes more than one) and gold medals, number two gets silver medals and number three gets bronze medals.
