Summary

Description The interior of the Old Stone Fort near Manchester, Tennessee, in the Southeastern United States. Excavations conducted in 1966 by the University of Tennessee turned virtually no ancient artifacts within the enclosure, lending evidence to the theory that the structure had a ceremonial function, rather than a martial one. The Old Stone Fort was built nearly 2000 years ago by local Middle Woodland cultures, and is now part of a state park.
