Summary

Description
English: A black and white image of the rations per man for one day's sledging on Scot's British Antarctic Expedition. The image shows eight Huntley and Palmers biscuits, butter, sugar cubes, tea, 'hoosh' a mix of cocoa, dried milk and sugar and a tin of pemmican, a mixture of dried beef and fat, to which water was added and sometimes crushed biscuits. Before setting out the food was taken out of the tins and packaging and repacked into weekly rations to save time and weight while sledging. Much debate has taken place since Scott's expedition as to the suitability of the rations and whether the poor choice played a part in the death of the South Pole men. It is generally agreed that the daily intake was too high in protein and too low in fat. As a result the men were at least 2000 calories short of the minimum requirement for what they were physically undertaking daily. This also included a vitamin deficiency, including C. While this lack of calories and nutrients would deplete body fat and energy stores, it also prevented the men from recovering adequately from their daily exertions or injuries and as a result physical problems were compounded. The image is numbered with a 34 on the lower left corner, possibly used by Charles Ford to illustrate his talks on Scott's British Antarctic Expedition on the TERRA NOVA. Ford’s interest in the personalities, events and the seals, penguins, birds and the natural environment is another lens through which to view those early expeditions and Antarctica today.
