®I;? Btnv^ at tl)? Srlinnl Perhaps the heaviest burden laid upon the United Charities ofChicago by any single cause is that which results from tuberculosis. It has for many years constituted a great relief problem, but with thedevelopment of a system of tuberculosis clinics in any large city, anew and magnified duty as well as a new opportunity are laid uponthe heart and conscience of its charity workers. Every day bringsto their attention men, women and children who can be saved ifgiven a chance. This has been demonstrated again and again inevery large city in the past few years but the price must be paid. While consumption is no respecter of persons, the greater number ofits victims are found in the homes of the poor. We recently madea study of the income in 200 families in which there is one or morecases of tuberculosis. They were living on about six dollars a week. The average number of rooms occupied was a little over three. You cannot have consumption in three rooms on six dollars
