This image was printed in The Capital Times, Madison, Wisconsin, accompanying the first published article about Orson Welles. It appears below the headline, "Cartoonist, Actor, Poet and only 10". The caption reads "Orson G. Welles" [sic], with photo credit to De Longe, a photography studio in Madison. The text of the article visible in the clipping reads as follows:
A poet, artist, cartoonist, and actor at 10 years old.
Orson G. Welles, a pupil in the fourth grade at the Washington school, is already attracting the attention of some of the greatest literary men and artists in the country.
This image is reproduced in a feature story that appeared in the issue of The Saturday Evening Post dated January 20, 1940 (Volume 212, Number 30). The clipping appears on page 9 of that issue, beginning a three-part series on Welles by Alva Johnston and Fred Smith, titled "How to Raise a Child: The Education of Orson Welles, Who Didn't Need It".
The image's publication February 19, 1926, in The Capital Times is derived from What Ever Happened to Orson Welles? A Portrait of an Independent Career (2006) by Joseph McBride (page 311). McBride notes that it was incorrectly sourced in the past to the Madison Journal or the Wisconsin State Journal. He attests that it appeared on the School Page of The Capital Times.
This image is not one of the photographs registered for copyright by the De Longe photography studio in 1926 as shown here (page 48); and there are no 1926 copyright registrations of photographs by The Capital Times (page 38).
A search for copyright renewals in 1954 shows none for De Longe studio or The Capital Times.
