Description
English: Detail from (early 18th century?) oil on panel overmantel painting in Drawing Room of Upcott Barton in the parish of Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon. The right side of the panel has here been cropped, and shows an extensive capriccio scene of ruined classical buildings within a riverscape. Description of scene: An English country gentleman stands (with excessively foreshortened legs) with shotgun in his right hand also holding a killed cock pheasant. A parrot holding a pair of cherries in his right foot drinks whilst perching on an ornamental water fountain. At his feet are his other sporting prizes, namely other killed birds. His two greyhound dogs rear up at their master over the body of a killed hare. To the right is a capriccio (mostly cropped out of this view) showing a ruined classical structure, possibly a representation of the Forum of Trajan or Baths of Caracalla in the Forum of Rome, with arcades and below an aedicule containing a classical sculpture of a standing male reminiscent of the Discobolus (discus thrower). In summary a scene depicting a cultured English country gentleman who had been on a "Grand Tour" to Rome. The ceiling of the room in which the painting is situated is contemporary and is decorated with plasterwork forms of sporting prizes consisting mainly of groups of 3 hares, salmon, pheasants, flat-fish (soles), and moorcocks (which appear in the canting arms of Moore)
