Summary

Description
English: Oxford Road, Reading, looking eastwards to the West Reading railway bridge, 1893. The bridge carries advertising for Newbery's Furniture. To the right of it is a signal-box. Various carts are in the road, and there is a handcart with four large open baskets on it. Horse-tram No. 2 has stopped, and everyone, the top-hatted driver and conductor, the passengers and passers-by, is posing for the camera: this is the first day of operation for the double-decked trams, following a fire at the depot. The tram carries advertising for Awmack's hardware. 1890-1899 : photograph by Walton Adams. There is a postcard version at Dyix 1243743.
