Title
Elizabeth McCandless Taylor as a young woman
Description
Elizabeth McCandless Taylor (1832-1895) as a young woman. Elizabeth was born in Ireland. In 1841 her older sister Jane McCandless (m. Forsyth) booked passage on a ship destined for America. As the family gathered on the dock to bid goodbye, Jane grabbed nine year old Elizabeth and pulled her aboard. The family watched helplessly as the ship sailed away. Jane and Elizabeth arrived in Boston where they lived until the 1850s. Elizabeth married Godfrey Taylor, an Irish merchant and they all traveled by ox team to Marysville, CA. In the 1860s they moved to Occidental and purchased 640 acres of land near Bodega, where they farmed hay, grain, potatoes and raised cattle. Taylor Lane in Occidental leads to what was once their property. The Taylors had six children and Elizabeth's sister Jane owned a tavern in Bodega Bay.
