a Persian account of 48 different ascetic orders in Benares (Varanasi), commissioned in 1800 by the accountant of the Raja of Benares. It includes three depictions of different kinds of "Nanakshahis" (Sikhs). Specifically found in a section of the manuscript on "The sixteen Vaishnava sects ". The types of Vaishnava "sects" described in the text include the following: Gosain of Vindraban (f. 4v); Gosain of Gokul (f. 5v); Sakhibhava (f. 7r); Ramanandi (f. 8r); Vairagi (f. 8v); Virakta (f. 8v); Naga (f. 9r); Ramanuji (f10r); Kabirpanthi (f10v); Dadupanthi (f11r); Ravidaspanthi (f11v); Harichandi (f. 12r); Surnapanthi (f. 12v); Madhavi (f .13v); Sadhavi (f. 13v); Charandasi (f. 15r) Description from: [1] –– Ursula Sims-Williams (author of above description) |
