This Gate was built between 1804-1806. ?Palvan? means wrestler or strongman. This gate is named after undefeated local fighter and poet Palvan (or Pakhlavan) Mahmud, who eventually became a revered Pir or the patron saint of the city.

I caught this maulavi or priest rushing to the mosque near the Palvan Darvaza for the noon prayer. As you can see, the gate is decorated in the form of arch. There is an inscription "Shahri Khiva" (Khiva city) at the entrance to Palvan-Darvaza. The construction of the gate was finished in 1835. Criminals were punished here. Local people call this gate, the ?gate of execution?. According to historical data, there was a slave trade in this region.
